Article with tips and information on your way to a finer lawn:  OVERSEEDING

Overseeding: tips for better germination,
To get good results from overseeding requires more than just sprinkling some seed on the surface and expecting it to germinate,
in fact if it does it will not last long and 99% of the time it wont germinate anyway.
TIP : Before overseeding carry out any necessary weed treatment as young seed cannot withstand weedkiller for at least the first two months following germination.

OVERSEEDING THIN AREAS:
To get seed to germinate well on your lawn you have to work it below the grass surface and into contact with the surface of the soil below so as the seed bursts its roots can get a quick hold in the soil. and the early growth shoots will be protected from close mowing and given a better chance in the early stages.

Rake the area needing seeded with a wire sprung toothed rake like the Draper Expert or use an aerating tool such as the

Try to spike deep enough so the seed will be worked down to soil surface, overseed with a fescue/bent seed mix if your looking to maintain a fine lawn and spread at 20grammes per square metre.
TIP :  There are a wide variety of other grass seeds available but for a fine lawn only use a fescue/bent grass seed mix.                                                                                                                                   EVERGREEN

Follow up after spreading by brushing the seed down into the base of the turf with a good stiff whalebone brush,(this will dislodge more dead material at the same time).
Once the seed has been worked down spread a light sandy compost over at 2kg per square metere and work in with the back of a rake. this will cover the seed and also level the surface, sprinle a little nitrogen at 35 grammes a square metre over the area as this will give the seed a boost of growth when it germinates and finally water the area to partly dissolve the fertilizer and moisten the seed.
It will take the seed about 10 days to germinate so with an eye on the weather during this time keep
watering every 2-3 days during dry conditions.
